Faculty Course Proposals, submit now!

Why involve an LA in your class?

LAs are CSU STEM majors they do an awesome job in supporting the students in our STEM classes. In LA assignments LAs are developing important skills that compliment the skills they develop in our classes and research, such as strengthening content understanding and developing communication skills.

 

Both Faculty and LAs apply ... faculty first, then LAs

When you apply you will be submitting a proposal for a course where you would like an LA.

Faculty can submit proposals until April 15th ... unless you need more time - just let us know! Once faculty course proposals are in students can start applying for LA Positions ... so the earlier the better.  If you are not sure what you are teaching in the spring, don't worry - we can always modify.

Couple of suggestions. At CSU, we typically hire LAs for 5 hours per week where 1 hour is designated for preparation time. In the course proposal you will be asked about the text you want the LA to see. Here are some examples that might help with this particular question.

 

Create message to LA applicants
General chemistry II is a foundational course which builds on General Chemistry I. Class meets 4 hrs a week and LAs will facilitate small group work during activities and clicker questions every class. Ideally LAs will also hold exam review sessions 5 times a semester. You'll meet with me for 30-60 minutes a week to prepare for class and provide feedback on course materials and student learning.

 

ADD THE DAYS AND TIMES YOU WANT THE LA IN CLASS (typically 4 hours). This will allow LAs to check that they dont have a conflict. If you are flexible on when they are in your class helping, indicate that.

Describe benefits to LAs  
LAs in general chemistry II learn to communicate chemistry ideas to chemists and other STEM majors. They also solidify their foundation knowledge which is beneficial for upper level course work.  LAs can expect to strength both their content and communication skills in this setting.
